Chapter 1
Introduction
Baseball Statpak 4.0 is a program for IBM-compatible
computers that will track statistics for up to 250 baseball
players on 12 teams. You can use it for one team or as many
leagues as you want. Baseball Statpak's simple, menu-driven
approach makes it fun and easy.
The program requires a true IBM-compatible machine with 384K
of memory. It can be used with any video adapter and will run
from a single floppy disk.
Baseball Statpak is distributed on a Shareware, or User-
Supported basis. If you like it and use it, we'd like you to
register the program. Your registration fee will get you an
Enhanced version with even more features. We'll discuss that in
the next section.
1.1 What's In This Version
We wrote the original Baseball Statpak in 1983 to give
Little Leaguers a chance to see their names and stats just as
they appear in the newspapers for major leaguers. The program has
been through a lot of changes since then, and today it's used by
hundreds of coaches across the country, at all levels.
When you load the sample file that comes with Version 4,
you'll see there's no reason why you can't use it for big
leaguers. In fact, we tested this version out with a dozen
American League teams. It's great for high schools, senior
leagues, colleges and company softball leagues.
Baseball Statpak 4.0 tracks each player's at bats, hits,
runs scored, RBI's, batting average, on-base percentage, slugging
percentage, doubles, triples, home runs, total bases, walks,
strikeouts and errors.
To some extent, this selection represents a compromise among
our users. Every coach wants something different, and we've had
lots of suggestions over the years. We chose these because
they're the stats most frequently carried in newspapers. And
they'll fit in an 80-column screen display.
Besides changing the statistics we track, we've added
point-and-shoot updating, scrolling statistical displays, better
team summaries, and the ability to delete inactive players. We've
also eliminated a few "undocumented features" (some people call
these bugs). Users of earlier versions will undoubtedly like the
changes, since most of them are the result of their suggestions.
Here are the program's major features (there's lots more if
you register. See Section 1.3 below for details).
* Set up and maintain teams. Up to 12 teams and 250 players
in a league. The number of leagues is limited only by disk
space.
* Add, delete and change basic player information.
* Update stats with individual game figures. The program
calculates new totals automatically and displays them
instantly
* Sort players alphabetically, by team or by any statistic.
Kids like this because you can almost always find a stat
that makes a youngster look good.
* Printed report for entire league.
* Printed reports by team.
* Team Statistical Summaries
* Coaches' Roster
1.2 About Shareware
This program is distributed on a Shareware basis. This gives
you a chance to try it before you buy it. Shareware works to the
benefit of authors and users. Authors can bring their products to
market without the huge advertising and distribution costs of
normal retail channels (we've been that route, and this is much
better). Users get a chance to see what a program is like before
they put down their hard-earned money.
Feel free to give this version to anyone and everyone. Put
it in your user group library or post it on bulletin boards. The
only caveat is that you must distribute the Shareware version of
Baseball Statpak 4.0 Page 2
the program in unmodified form, and with all of the files listed
below.
If you like the program and decide to use it, please
register it. The registration fee is $30. We've made it easy. You
can fill out a registration form on screen and send it to your
printer without leaving the program. Or you can fill out the
registration form at the end of this manual.
Previous users may note that we did not ask a registration
fee for earlier versions. But in order to devote the time we need
to make Statpak better, we ave to make it a paying proposition
like our other programs. Statpak 4.0 contains all the features of
our earlier versions and many improvements. But registered users
will get an ENHANCED version of the program with some real
knockout capabilities.
1.3 The Enhanced Baseball Statkeeper
The Enhanced Baseball Statpak, which you'll get when you
register, includes full database capabilities that eliminate many
of the hassles of setting up and maintaining a league. Here are
some of the features:
* Keep track of full league management information,
including age, address and phone numbers for players and
coaches.
* Print team or full-league rosters with names and
addresses.
* Print mailing labels for the full league, an individual
team, or your coaches.
* A full, flexible drafting system that includes:
o Rating of players by hitting, throwing, fielding
and pitching ability.
o Calculation of a normalized, composite player score
that makes it easy to see how any player compares
to the rest of the league.
o A printed composite score report that makes it easy
for coaches to make their selections.
Baseball Statpak 4.0 Page 3
o A point-and-shoot "drafting screen" that shows
players ranked by their composite score. Hit a key
and instantly assign a player to a team.
Files created with the Shareware version of Baseball Statpak
4.0 are fully compatible with the Enhanced version. Just load
them into the Enhanced Version and add the information you want.
1.4 The Files on Your Disk
Your disk or archive contains the following files. Those
marked with asterisks must be on the disk or in the hard drive
directory from which the program is launched.
STAT40.EXE* The Baseball Statpak program file.
BASEBALL.BAT* The appropriately named batch file used to launch
Statpak 4.0. Do NOT try to run STAT40.EXE by
itself.
STATPAK4.PAK* A file containing packed display screens used by
the program.
SPEEDSCR.COM* A screen display driver used by Statpak.
STATPAK.CFG* A file containing information about your monitor.
HINSTALL.BAT A batch file to install the program on a hard
disk.
FINSTALL.BAT A batch file to install the program on a floppy
disk.
STAT40.DOC This user's manual.
PRINTME.BAT A batch file that will print the manual.
DEMO.DAT Sample player data file. While you don't need this
or the next two files to run the program, it's a
good idea to put it on your first floppy or into
your hard drive directory when you start. That
way, you can see how the program works without
having to enter a lot of data.
DEMO.TMS Team and coach data.
Baseball Statpak 4.0 Page 4
DEMO.NAM League Data.
DEMOCOPY.BAT A batch file to copy the league data files. See
installation instructions below.
READ.ME Description of the files on the disk and last-
minute information not included in the manual.
1.5 Installing the Program
Before you do anything, make a backup of your Statpak master
disk and put the original away in a safe place. You should use
the original only to make working copies.
You can install the program in two ways. You can just copy
the files marked with asterisks to a floppy or a hard drive
directory. Or you can use the batch files we've provided. Here's
how to use the batch files:
1.5.1 Hard Drive Installation
1. Put your Statpak master disk in Drive A:
2. Type A: and hit ENTER.
Note: You can install the program from Drive B the same
way. Just substitute the letter "B" for the letter "A"
above.
3. Type HINSTALL TargetDrive: and hit enter.
TargetDrive: is the letter representing the logical hard
drive on which you want the program installed. For
example, to install the program on Drive C:, type HINSTALL
C: and hit ENTER.
4. The program will be installed in a directory called \BB40.
So, if you installed it on Drive C:, it will be in a
directory called C:\BB40.
When you install Statpak on a hard disk, the demonstration
data files will be included. You can delete them later if you
want.
Baseball Statpak 4.0 Page 5
1.5.2 Two-Floppy Drive Installation
The following instructions assume you're using Drive A for
your master disk and Drive B for your working disk. If you're
doing it the other way around, just reverse the drive designators
in the instructions below.
1. Format a floppy disk. We'll call this the Working Disk.
You can include the operating system if you wish (Use the
FORMAT Drive:/S option). In fact, you must include the
operating system if you want to be able to start your
computer from your new working disk.
2. Put Your Statpak master disk in Drive A. Put your newly-
formatted working (the disk on which you want the program
installed) in Drive B.
3. Type FINSTALL B: and hit ENTER. The appropriate files will
be copied to your new working disk.
4. When the program files have been installed, you'll be
given the opportunity to copy the demonstration data files
to your working disk.
5. To copy the demonstration files, type DEMOCOPY DRIVE:
(where DRIVE: is the letter representing the drive to
which you want the files copied. For example, to copy the
DEMO files to Drive B:, type DEMOCOPY B: and hit ENTER.
1.5.3 Single Floppy Drive Installation
If your system has only one floppy drive, do the following.
1. Prepare your target disk as outlined in Step 1 above.
2. Put Your Statpak master disk in Drive A.
3. Type FINSTALL B: and hit ENTER.
4. Although you have only one Drive, DOS will behave as
though you have two drives. It will ask you to change
disks as it switches from one logical drive to the other.
As it copies the files, it will ask you to switch between
your SOURCE disk and your TARGET disk. The SOURCE disk is
your Statpak Master disk, and the TARGET disk is the
Working Disk you're making.
Baseball Statpak 4.0 Page 6
5. To copy the demonstration files once the program has been
installed, type DEMOCOPY B: and hit ENTER.
1.6 Starting the Program
If you have a hard disk, switch to the directory containing
the program. For example, if you've installed it in the BB40
directory on Drive C, type CD\BB40 and it ENTER.
If you have a floppy disk, switch to the drive containing
the program. For example, if the disk is in Drive A, type A: and
hit enter.
To run the program, type BASEBALL and hit ENTER.
WARNING: Do NOT try to run the STAT40.EXE program by itself.
It won't work properly. Always use BASEBALL.BAT to launch
Statpak. The BASEBALL.BAT file sets up the program by first
loading SPEEDSCR.COM, a memory-resident display driver. The
program won't work properly without it. The batch file also
removes SPEEDSCR when you exit.
In a few seconds, you'll see the Baseball Statpak title
screen, followed by a Shareware message. This is the only
commercial you'll get. Strike any key and you'll see the Main
Menu.
1.6.1 Running Statpak under Windows
Although Statpak is a DOS application, you can run it under
Microsoft Windows 3.0 in 386 Enhanced mode. We don't recommend
running it in a window (slowwwww!), but as a full-screen
application, it multitasks nicely. In fact, we wrote this manual
using Windows to allow us to switch quickly between the program
and our word processor. Just set Statpak up as a normal DOS
application, and be sure to make BASEBALL.BAT the file that
Windows executes.
If you're running Windows in Standard or Real mode, Statpak
will load and run properly. But when you exit from the program,
Windows doesn't know what to do with the SPEEDSCR driver. You'll
get a message telling you to exit from your "Pop-UP" program.
There's no way to do this, so you have to reboot your computer.
No harm done, but it's a pain in the neck.

Chapter 2
The Main Menu
Baseball Statpak 4.0 is completely menu driven. As you work
your way through the program, you'll see a series of menus. To
select any choice from a menu, use the UP and DOWN arrow keys to
highlight your choice and hit ENTER.
The Main Menu directs you to various parts of the program.
When you first run Statpak, the menu will be displayed in
monochrome mode. You can change this to color. The menu looks
like this.
Main Menu
1 Load or Create League
2 View/Update Stats
3 Add a Player
4 Sort Stats
5 Reports
6 Change League Info
7 Set Data Drive/Monitor
8 Registration Form
9 Quit
No League Selected (Data Drive C)
At the bottom of the menu, you'll see the name of the league
you're currently working with, as well as how many teams and
players you've entered. If you haven't yet selected a league, the
program will display a "No League Selected" message. It will also
show you what drive you're using for data. Here's an overview of
what the Main Menu choices will do:
1. Load or Create League: Before you can make the program do
anything useful, you must load an existing league file
from your disk or create a new league. Even if you're only
keeping track of one team, you must create a League for
it. This menu choice will allow you to create a new league
or pick from a list of existing leagues.
2. View/Update Stats: This will display a scrolling list of
players and their stats. By highlighting a player and
hitting the ENTER key, you can update his stats or roster
Baseball Statpak 4.0 Page 8
information, correct errors in his record, or delete the
player's record altogether.
3. Add a Player: This will bring up a Player Entry Form. Just
type in the player's name and team and he'll be added to
the roster with all stats set to zero.
4. Sort Stats: This will allow you to sort your players by
name, team, or by any of the statistics we track. The
View/Update Stats screen always displays players in the
sorted order you've chosen.
5. Reports: The meat and potatoes of the program. This will
allow you to produce printed reports showing player stats
for the whole league, for one team, or for all teams. You
can also generate a summary report by team and a list of
teams and coaches.
6. Change League Info: Once you've created a league, this
will allows you to add teams, change teams names or coach
assignments.
7. Set Monitor/Data Drive: Sets up the program for color or
monochrome operation and allows you to access data from a
different drive, if you choose.
8. Registration Form: To register, just fill in the blanks
and the program will print the registration form.
Baseball Statpak 4.0 Page 9
Chapter 3
Loading or Creating a League
Choice No. 1 from the main menu will allow you to load an
existing league file or create a new one.
Your disk drive light will go on as the program searches for
existing files. If the program finds no files on the disk, it
will ask you if you want to create a new league. If you do, type
"Y" and you'll go on to the next section
If the program finds league files on your disk, you'll see a
list that looks like this:
FILE LEAGUE NAME
============================
-------- CREATE NEW LEAGUE
DEMO DEMO LEAGUE
MINORS PIKESVILLE MINORS
CLINIC PIKESVILLE CLINIC
The FILE column contains the name of the disk file
containing the league information. The LEAGUE NAME column
contains the name of the league itself. DEMO is the demonstration
league we've included with the program.
* To select an existing league, use the CURSOR keys to
highlight the league you want. Then hit ENTER.
Note: If there are more league files than can fit in the
window, you can use the CURSOR keys, PgUp, PgDn, HOME and
END keys to move up and down through the list).
* To create a new league, use the CURSOR keys to highlight
the line that says CREATE NEW LEAGUE. Then hit ENTER.
* To return to the Main Menu without loading or creating a
league, hit the ESC key.
If you load an existing league, a "LOADING" message will
appear on the screen. When the file has been loaded, you'll be
returned to the Main Menu.
Baseball Statpak 4.0 Page 10
3.1 Creating a New League
Before you create a league, you should have a list of
players available. You'll also have to decide what you want to
name each team. If you know the coaches for each team, have that
information ready, too. You can alter it later, but it's best to
have it ready.
When you choose to create a new league, you'll be asked,
"Create New League? (Y/N)"
* Type "Y" to create a new league.
* Type "N" to return to the Main Menu.
If you go ahead, the following message will appear:
To create a new league, you must enter a FILE NAME, a
LEAGUE NAME and at least one player. Do you want to
continue? (Y/N)?
This gives you another chance to bail out. If you want to go
ahead, type "Y". If you want to return to the Main Menu, type
"N."
If you go ahead, you'll see this prompt on your screen:
Enter File Name for this League:
Type a filename of up to eight characters and hit ENTER.
File names may consist of letters and numbers only. The program
won't let you enter anything else. The name you type here will
appear as the name of the three files Statpak will create for
your new league. What name you give the file isn't important, but
it should mean something to you.
Once you've entered the filename, a League Information Form
will appear. It looks like this (see next page):

last sorted the statistics. If you haven't sorted the list, the
players will be displayed in the order in which they were
entered. The type of sort will always be displayed at the bottom
of the screen
Baseball Statpak 4.0 Page 15
The player's last name and first initial are displayed at
the left, along with the player's team. If the player's last name
is longer than 10 characters, only the first 10 characters will
be shown.
4.1 Moving Through the List
One name on the list will always be highlighted. We've
indicated that highlighting here with the ">" character. In the
list above, notice that the highlight mark is on the first entry.
Here's how to move through the list:
* You can scroll through the list and move the highlight bar
by using the UP and DOWN cursor keys. If there's more
than one screenful of players, moving the cursor to the
top or bottom row and holding the arrow key will scroll
the list up or down. In addition, you can move the
highlight bar in these ways:
* Use PgUp or PgDn to move the highlight bar a page at a
time.
* Use the HOME key to get to the top of the list. Use the
END key to go to the bottom of the list.
* The list is also sensitive to ALPHABETIC characters. If
you hit one of the alphabetic keys, the highlight bar will
jump to the NEXT name that begins with the letter you
typed. In this case, the highlight bar is on RIPKEN. If
you type the letter "G," the highlight bar will jump to
GALLAGHER. This is useful when you're updating stats,
particularly if the list is sorted alphabetically or by
team.
* You can exit from the list and return to the Main Menu at
any time by hitting the ESC key.
4.2 Updating Player Stats
From this list, you can enter individual game stats, change
a player's totals, delete the player or change the player's
roster information.
Baseball Statpak 4.0 Page 16
To make any of these changes, move the highlight bar to the
player's name and hit ENTER. The following menu will pop up
(let's say we've highlighted B ANDERSON):
---------------------------
PLAYER: B. ANDERSON
---------------------------
1. Enter Game Stats
2. Change Player Totals
3. Change Roster Info
4. Delete Player
5. Return to List
6. Main Menu
--------------------------
One of the choices on the menu will be highlighted. To
choose one of the functions from the menu, use your UP and DOWN
cursor keys to highlight your choice. Then hit ENTER.
Choice No. 5 will return you to the scrolling list of
players. Choice No. 6 will return you to the Main Menu. We'll
discuss the remaining choices below.
4.2.1 Enter Game Stats
This will allow you to enter a players stats for an
individual game. The stats will be added to the player's current
figures. New totals, total bases, batting averages, on-base
percentage, and slugging percentages will be calculated. When you
chose to Enter Game Stats, the following form (see next page)
will appear on your screen. Once again, we've truncated the
display to fit within the margins of the instruction manual
Baseball Statpak 4.0 Page 17

-----------------------------------------------------------
The player's current stats will be shown at the top of the
screen. Your cursor will be resting on the first field, labeled
"At Bats."
1. Enter the appropriate information FOR THIS GAME in each
field. Then hit ENTER to move on to the next field. When
you finish with the last field (Errors), the cursor will
move back to the first field.
2. When you're satisfied with the information you've entered,
hit ESC.
3. You'll be asked, "Is This Information Correct?"
If the information is correct, type "Y"
If the information is not correct, type "N." You'll be
asked if you want to go back and correct it. If you want
to correct the information, type "Y" and you'll return to
the game stats form. If you don't want to correct the
information, type "N" and you'll return to the scrolling
stats list without making any changes.
4. When you've confirmed that the information is correct, the
program will store your changes, make the appropriate
calculations and return you to the scrolling list. The
Baseball Statpak 4.0 Page 18
information you just entered will be reflected in the new
scrolling list display. To update another player, just
select his entry on the list and hit ENTER.
4.2.1.1 What the Abbreviations Mean
BA - Batting Average 2B - Doubles
SLG - Slugging Percentage 3B - Triples
OBP - On Base Percentage TB - Total Bases
AB - At Bats BB - Bases on Balls (Walks)
H - Hits SO - Strikeouts
R - Runs Scored SB - Stolen Bases
RBI - Runs Batted In E - Errors
4.2.1.2 About Derived Stats
The statistics are straightforward for the most part. Here's
how the derived (calculated) stats are computed:
Batting Average (BA): Number of Hits / Number of At Bats. Only
official At Bats should be counted. A walk or sacrifice is not
counted as an official at bat.
On-Base Pct. (OBP): (Hits + Walks)/(At Bats + Walks). This shows
how often the batter got on base.
Total Bases (TB): (HR * 4)+(3B * 3)+(2B * 2)+ Singles. We don't
track singles separately, but they're derived by subtracting the
total number of doubles, triples and home runs from the number of
hits.
Slugging Percentage (SLG): Total Bases/At Bats. This is a measure
of a hitter's power. A player who hits more doubles, triples and
home runs will have a higher slugging percentage than a player
with the same batting average who hits mostly singles.
4.2.2 Change Player Totals
Use this function to correct any errors that may have crept
into the statistics.
1. You will see the same form you see when you enter Game
Totals. But this time, all the blanks will be filled in
with the player's current totals.
2. Change any totals that aren't correct by typing over the
existing totals.
Baseball Statpak 4.0 Page 19
3. When you're satisfied, hit the ESC key.
4. The new totals will be substituted for the old totals and
you'll be returned to the scrolling statistics list. The
derived statistics (BA, OBP, SLG and TB) will be
recalculated based on the TOTALS you provide in the form.
4.2.3 Change Roster Info
This will allow you to correct the misspelling of a player's
name or change his team assignment. This is most helpful if
you've entered your players names without team assignments or are
making roster changes.
The Player Information form will appear on the screen, with the
blanks for Last Name, First Name and Team filled in with the
current information.
Change any of the fields you want to correct by typing over the
information contained in them.
When you're satisfied with the new information, hit ESC. The
player's record will be updated with the new information, and
you'll return to the scrolling statistics list. Any change in
name or team will be reflected immediately.
4.2.4 Delete a Player
This will allow you to delete an inactive player.
1. When you choose this function, a message will appear
asking if you want to delete this player.
2. Type "Y" to delete the player. Type "N" to return to the
scrolling list without deleting the player.
When you delete a player, his name will remain on the list
temporarily. But the first letter of his last name will be an
asterisk(*).
The player will not be deleted permanently until you exit
from the scrolling list and return to the Main Menu. This gives
you a chance to recover from accidental deletions.
To restore a player mistakenly deleted, highlight his entry
on the list and hit ENTER. Then choose Change Roster Information.
The Player Information form will be displayed, with the player's
Baseball Statpak 4.0 Page 20
name fully restored. Make any other changes you want at this
time, then hit ESC to restore the player.
Once you have deleted a player and returned to the Main
Menu, the player's record will be permanently deleted.
Deleting a player will NOT affect the accuracy of team
summary displays or printouts. Team statistical summaries are
recalculated from scratch each time you ask for them.
However, when a player is deleted, that player's position in
order of entry will be taken by the LAST player on the list.
You'll see this the next time you view the scrolling display. It
means you'll have to resort the statistics to your liking after
you've deleted one or more players. But that's not hard. See the
next chapter for details.
Baseball Statpak 4.0 Page 21
Chapter 5
Sorting Your Stats
This is the fun part. Baseball Statpak allows you to sort
your players by name, by team, or by any statistic (in ascending
or descending order). You can always find some statistic to make
everyone look good. Sorting can also be an invaluable aid to
coaches in evaluating their teams' performance.
Sorting affects both the scrolling display and printed
reports. Players' records will always be displayed or printed in
the order of the most recent sort.
Resorting is NOT automatic. If you've updated your players'
stats with game figures, or changed totals or roster information,
you should resort the stats when you return to the Main Menu.
When you choose No. 4 from the Main Menu, a scrolling menu
of statistics will pop up. It includes all the totals and derived
statistics, as well as sorting by NAME and by TEAM.
To select a sort, highlight the statistic you want and hit ENTER.
If you're sorting on a statistic as opposed to NAME or TEAM,
you'll be asked if you want an ASCENDING or DESCENDING sort. Type
the letter "A" or "D" to get the sort you want
Note: An ascending sort lists players from lowest to
highest. Generally it's used for "negative" stats such as
strikeouts or errors. A descending sort ranks players from
highest to lowest and is more commonly used.
To return to the Main Menu without sorting, hit ESC.
You'll see the results of your sort the next time you view
your players or print a report.
Selecting a TEAM sort will not only sort by team, but also
alphabetically within each team. Alphabetic and Team Sorting are
the most efficient for entering game stats.
Sorting is not instantaneous, but shouldn't cause much
delay. The program uses a Shell Sort technique. This isn't the
fastest available, but it's reasonably quick and conserves
memory. On the slowest computer we could find (an original IBM PC
purchased in 1983), it took six seconds to completely resort a
Baseball Statpak 4.0 Page 22
full 250-player roster. On an 80386 computer, it took one second.
A math coprocessor should improve on those times.
Baseball Statpak 4.0 Page 23
Chapter 6
Printed Reports
Statpak 4.0 will print a variety of reports that your
players will enjoy and coaches will find valuable for evaluating
team performance.
The reports are designed to mimic the major league stats
found in most large newspapers, given the limits of a standard
80-column printer. But Statpak gives you one big advantage.
Because you can sort by any statistic, you can emphasize the
items that are important to you.
Players statistics will always appear in the order of the
MOST RECENT sort. Resorting is not automatic. If you've entered
game stats or made any changes since your last sort, there's a
good chance the players will not be in the proper order. So make
sure you sort your stats just before you start printing reports.
When you choose No. 5 (Printed Reports from the Main Menu,
you'll see another menu that looks like this.
Printed Reports
In Order of Current Sort
1 All Players (Sort Order)
2 Players by Team
3 One Team
4 Team Summaries
5 Teams and Coaches
6 Main Menu
Before you ask for a report, make sure your printer is on
line. Position the paper so that the print head is at the very
top of a page. The report function will work with any standard
printer that can produce at least 80 columns of text. Multi-page
reports will contain titles and page numbers on each page.
To select the report you want, use the UP and DOWN arrow
keys to highlight the report and hit ENTER. To return to the Main
Menu, select No. 6 or just hit the ESC key.
Here's a summary of the reports:
Baseball Statpak 4.0 Page 24
1. All Players: This will print out your entire league, in
the order in which the players were last sorted.
2. Players by Team: This will print out the entire league, by
team, with one team to a page. Within each team, the
results will be in the order of the most recent sort.
3. One Team: This will allow you to print out the results for
just one team. When you choose this function, a list of
teams will pop up. To exit from the list without printing
a report, hit ESC. To print a team, use the Up and Down
arrow keys to highlight the team you want and hit ENTER.
4. Team Summaries: This will calculate team statistics. The
summaries are rebuilt from scratch each time you choose
this function. When the summary has been built, the team
statistics will be displayed on the screen. You'll be
asked, "Print This Report? (Y/N)." Type "Y" to print this
report or "N" to return to the Report Menu.
5. Teams and Coaches: This will print out a list showing the
league name, the name of each team and the coach assigned
to that team. It's helpful when you're organizing your
league.
Baseball Statpak 4.0 Page 25
Chapter 7
Other Features
In this chapter, we'll talk about other features available
from the Main Menu.
7.1 Add a Player
You can add a player to your roster at any time by choosing
No. 3 from the Main Menu. When you add a player, a Player
Information Form will appear.
1. Enter the player's Last Name, First Name, and the number
of the team to which he/she is assigned. If you don't want
to assign a team at this point, type the number Zero in
the Team field. You can always update the form later.
2. When you're satisfied with the information, hit ESC.
You'll be asked to confirm the addition.
3. Once you've confirmed the addition of the player, you'll
be asked if you want to add another player. Type "Y" to
add another player or "N" to return to the Main Menu.
7.2 Set Monitor Type and Data Drive
This function will allow you to set the program for a color
or monochrome monitor or switch to a different data drive. A
small menu will appear asking you whether you want to change the
monitor or data drive. Use the cursor key to select the one you
want and hit ENTER.
7.2.1 Change Monitor Type
Statpak 4.0 will work in glorious living color or glorious
monochrome. When you choose this function from the menu, a box
will pop up asking, "Do You Have a Color or Monochrome Monitor
(C/M)?"
* Type the letter "C" and hit ENTER if you have a color
monitor.
Baseball Statpak 4.0 Page 26
* Type "M" and hit ENTER if you have a monochrome monitor.
The monochrome setting will work with all monitors. The
color display will work best with color monitors. If you use the
color setting with a monochrome monitor, you may find it
difficult to read some of the screen displays.
Although laptop computers with LCD screens generally mimic a
color monitor for graphics purposes, most of them are not good at
reproducing text screen colors. You're best off using the
monochrome setting with a laptop.
The default setting when you first run Statpak 4.0 is
monochrome. If you change it to color, the program will store the
information in the STATPAK.CFG file and display color screens
each time you run it after that. You can change from color to
monochrome at any time.
7.2.2 Change Data Drive
When you run Statpak 4.0, it expects to find your data files
on the drive from which it was launched. Even with a single
floppy, you should have room for all your files. But you may want
to use a different drive for your data.
When you choose this function a box will pop up asking what
drive you're using for your data. Type the letter of the drive
(A-Z) and hit ENTER.
Statpak will examine the drive you've named to see if it's
available and look for the presence of a formatted disk.
If the drive is not available or there's no disk in it,
you'll see an error message. Statpak will ask if you want to try
again. Type "Y" to try again, "N" to return to the Main Menu.
When you select a new data drive, Statpak will remove
references to the current file and display "No League Selected"
at the bottom of the Main Menu. To access data from the new
drive, choose "Load or Create League" from the Main Menu.
7.3 Change League Info
This will allow you to change the setup of your league. You
can add or change team names and coaches, even change the name of
the league itself.
Baseball Statpak 4.0 Page 27
When you you choose this function, the League Information
form will appear. This is the same form you saw when you created
the league. Only this time, all the current information will
about the teams and coaches will be displayed.
You can change any of the information by typing over it or
deleting it. When you're satisfied with what you have, hit ESC.
For details on the League Information Form, see page 11.
CAUTION: Be careful when deleting a team. You can't leave
any gaps in the list of team names (other than blank spaces at
the end of the list if you have fewer than 12 teams).
Also, remember that Statpak deals with teams by number. If
you assigned the name "Tigers" to Team 4 and then switched the
name "Tigers" to Team 3, the program won't automatically switch
Team 4 players to Team 3. You'll have to do that manually (it's
quite easy from the scrolling display).

Chapter 9
Technical Information
Baseball Statpak 4.0 was written using the Microsoft Basic
Professional Development System Version 7.0 and the Windows R-E-Z
library from Connect Software, Inc. The data entry screens were
created using Screen Sculptor and SpeedScreen, products of the
Software Bottling Company of New York. The SPEEDSCR.COM program
on your disk is licensed by Federal Hill Software from the
Software Bottling Company of New York for distribution with its
programs. It may not be used for any other purpose.
9.1 Statpak Files
Statpak 4.0 uses three files to maintain data for each
league. Each file has the same name but a different extension.
All these files must be present on the Data Drive for the program
to work properly. Here's what the files contain:
FILENAME.DAT Player information, including name, team
assignments and statistics.
FILENAME.TMS Team names and coaching assignments.
FILENAME.NAM A small file containing the name of the league.
When copying league files from one disk to another, make
sure that you copy all THREE files. The program will not function
properly otherwise. Likewise, if you want to delete a league from
a disk, you should delete all THREE files.
Unless you have a large number of extremely large leagues,
your program and data files should be able to fit on a single
360K floppy disk.
Each player record takes up approximately 240 bytes of space
(the Shareware files use the same record structure as the
Enhanced version, which makes the two completely compatible). A
full league of 250 players will therefore take up about 62K of
disk space, including the league information and team name files.
The program files require only 120K of space. Even on a 360K
floppy that contains the operating system, you should have 150K
Baseball Statpak 4.0 Page 31
of space available for data. Unless you're managing some really
big leagues, you should have plenty of room.
A space problem with 360K floppies may occur if you maintain
several leagues on the same disk and delete a large number of
players and add others. The program does not actually remove
entries (this is virtually impossible with a random access file
structure). Instead it flags deleted entries as being inactive.
So the file will continue to grow with each player you add,
regardless of how many you've deleted.
The Enhanced version of the program includes a packing
routine to compress these files. However, even this requires some
disk space, as a copy of the original file must be made.
The solution for those using 360K floppies is to use a
separate data disk (if you have two drives), or to make a
separate disk with program and data for each league if you have
only one drive. We really don't see this as a major problem, but
you should be aware of it.
9.2 Keeping Your Data Intact
Statpak 4.0 takes every precaution to keep your data intact.
It updates the files each time you change a player's stats but
keeps files open no longer than necessary to do the update. This
minimizes exposure from damage caused by power failures during
disk writes.
Even so, you should always be aware of Murphy's Law:
"Whatever can go wrong, will. And at the worst possible time."
And there's our corollary to that theory: "Murphy was an
optimist." The power WILL fail during a disk write. Your hard
disk WILL inevitably crash. Floppies WILL inevitably go bad. Your
cat WILL decide to use your computer as a litter box.
You'll spend a lot of time entering and updating data. To
protect that investment, BACK UP YOUR DATA FILES REGULARLY. Disks
are cheap. Your time isn't. All you have to do is copy the files
to a floppy disk and keep the backup away from fire, flood,
magnets, intense heat, small children and other animals. This
applies not only to baseball statistics files, but to any files
you absolutely want to keep intact.

Other Federal Hill Software Products
Since 1983, Federal Hill Software has offered an outstanding
series of programs for horse and dog race handicapping. Recently,
we've expanded into casino card game simulations.
Our programs are based on years of experience, and we have
thousands of satisfied customers. If you're a racing or casino
games fan, one of these may interest you. You can order any of
these our programs using the form at the end of this manual.
The Cambridge Handicappers
The Cambridge Handicappers will help you pick winners in
horse and dog races. There are lots of handicapping systems
around. Some are so simplistic that they can't possibly work.
Others are so complex that no one can possibly use them.
We've spent a lot of time and effort finding out what's
important and what's not. As a result, our handicappers are
simple enough that you'll be encouraged to use them, and
sophisticated enough to make you a winner at the track. In short,
they work.
Better yet, our instruction manuals tell you how to bet and
more important, WHEN to bet. Knowing when to bet and when to sit
out is one of the secrets of good handicapping.
If you're a racing fan, you owe it to yourself to give one
of these a try:
Cambridge Thoroughbred Handicapper 5
Version 5 is an entirely new release that includes a full
relational database to track handicapping data and wagering
results. Handicapping formulas have also been updated. Factors
include half-mile and final time, lengths behind, weight carried,
jockey record, post position, speed rating, track variant, class
and beaten favorite. Requires 640K of memory and a hard disk or
high-density (720K or better) floppy. Registration fee is $50.

Greyhound racing is one of the fastest-growing sports in
America, and our handicapper will add to the fun. Factors include
speed, class movement, speed at turn, box position, inside-
outside running tendencies, beaten favorite and kennel ranking.
Requires 256K of memory and will run from a floppy disk.
Registration fee is $30.
Cambridge Harness Handicapper
The Trotters are tricky, but with the Harness handicapper,
you'll have the winner's edge. Factors include half-mile and
final times, post position, stretch gain, parked-out signs,
driver record, and class movement. Requires 256K of memory and
will run from a floppy disk. Registration fee is $30.
